What Is Yoga?

Yoga is a holistic practice that combines physical postures, breath control, meditation, and ethical principles. It originated in ancient India and has evolved over thousands of years into various styles, each with specific benefits.

The regular practice of yoga can improve strength, flexibility, and balance, enhance breathing efficiency, promote better sleep, and reduce stress levels. It also fosters a sense of inner peace and mindfulness that can extend into everyday life. Whether you're an athlete looking to supplement your training, someone seeking relief from injury or chronic pain, or just hoping for some peace in a hectic world, yoga has the tools to help.

Every body is different, so it's all about finding the style and practice that aligns with your individual needs and goals. Moreover, the communal aspect of yoga classes provides a supportive, welcoming environment where everyone is embraced, regardless of skill level or experience.

Ultimately, yoga isn't just about the body's performance on the mat, but how the practice enhances overall well-being and enriches one's lifestyle beyond the class. It's a comprehensive journey of self-exploration and well-being.

Meet Nicki, Our Yoga Instructor

Twenty-five years ago, Nicki embarked on her fitness training career with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA). As an instructor, she taught an array of classes across the city before ultimately setting her sights on yoga.

Armed with an impressive 350-hour RYT training that she received from YogaFit, yoga quickly and undoubtedly became her most cherished class to instruct. The accessibility of yoga, with its inclusivity of all ages, sizes, and abilities, particularly appealed to her. This universal characteristic combined with the intimate age span of her classes, varying from 20 to 68 years, is what Nicki finds most rewarding.

Her yoga teaching emphasizes the maintenance of a balanced and functional body, robust muscles, and healthy joints. From head to toe, Nicki’s classes encapsulate it all. They intertwine breath with movement while imparting techniques to control our nervous system. The simplicity and inclusivity of Nicki's teaching language make it easy for anyone to follow and benefit from.

Explore Our Yoga Classes

At Lifeways Integrative Wellness, we pride ourselves on offering a diverse selection of yoga styles to fit every person's needs and goals. From the powerful and dynamic routines of Power Yoga to the serene, slow-paced stretches of Yin Yoga, we have a class tailored for every level of experience, ability, and desired intensity.

  • Power Yoga

Faster Flow, one breath, one movement. Sequence repeated a few times to generate heat and build familiarity. Eg Sun Salutations.

  • Vinyasa Flow

Vinyasa yoga practice connects individual poses with breath in a series of flowing sequences of movement. Designed to progressively open the body, each sequence in a Vinyasa yoga class builds upon the previous, evolving into deeper, more advanced postures as the practice unfolds. Focus on muscle strength, balance and flexibility.

The beauty of Vinyasa yoga is the variety. There is no standard sequence in Vinyasa yoga, so the style, pace and intensity will all vary. The class may be dynamic and focus on strengthening postures, or it may be a slower flow with an emphasis on mobility and flexibility in the joints...

This class is suitable for all levels of yogi. Beginners will require some patience and self love and give themselves time to learn the language of poses. No ego!

  • Slow Flow

This class is a blend of Flow and Yin. Mainly focuses on floor poses and flows at a slower pace , more instruction given and pose break down.A good place to start if new to Yoga.

  • Yin

Yin yoga is a quiet contemplative practice, a slower-paced, more meditative version of a flow practice.

It targets the deepest tissues of the body, our connective tissues – ligaments, joints, bones, the deep fascia networks of the body. Opening and increasing the space in the joints. In Yin yoga, the poses are held for a long period of time, typically three to five minutes.

Yin Yoga is a practice within which we can explore our busy thoughts and lives. We can start softening the fidgety patterns of the mind and gradually cultivate habits of calm and stillness. It is not “easier” but can be challenging to those who find stillness challenging.

FAQs

  • I'm new to yoga. Are the beginner yoga classes at Lifeways Integrative Wellness suitable for me?

Absolutely! Our beginner yoga classes at Lifeways Integrative Wellness are designed to accommodate those new to the practice. We provide guidance on basic poses, breath control, and meditation practices to create a solid foundation for your yoga journey. The classes are kept at a relaxed pace to give beginners time to become familiar with the sequences. As you gain confidence and understanding, we also offer intermediate and advanced levels to help you build upon your skills.

  • What is the recommended attire for attending a yoga class?

At Lifeways Integrative Wellness, your comfort is our priority during any yoga class. As such, we recommend wearing clothing that is comfortable, flexible, and allows for a full range of motion. Fabrics that are sweat-wicking and breathable are often the best choices. It's best to avoid anything too loose or baggy, as this can interfere with your ability to perform certain poses or cause discomfort in inversions. Socks are usually removed for better grip on the yoga mat. Whether you are attending a dynamic Vinyasa class or a relaxing Yin yoga class, the main thing is that your attire should not distract you from your practice.

  • What do I need to bring to a yoga class at Lifeways Integrative Wellness?

For a yoga class at Lifeways Integrative Wellness, it's advisable to bring a yoga mat, a water bottle, and a towel. If you are attending a restorative or Yin yoga class, you might want to bring a small blanket for comfort during long-held poses and a yoga bolster or blocks if you have them. If you're a beginner, don't worry if you don't have your own mat or props - we have everything you need available at the studio. It's also recommended to bring an open mind and positive energy - two invaluable things for a fulfilling yoga experience!
